| A challenge that is not out of place |
| |
Some major airlines in the world are shaken by the rise in price of the barrel of
oil, which trebled in two years and doubled within one year. When the price of the
barrel of oil reached 135 dollars, an European airline official declared that at this
rhythm, 50 European airlines will soon disappear and that, on the older continent,
only 5 among the leaders will stand the test
If the leaders in the air transport sector are worried and pessimistic, what then
will befall the new airline that ASKY is? Earlier in January, some newspapers, when
the word was released on the creation of the airline, reminded their readership that
airlines created in Africa disappeared before the start of their operations. The current
situation in the air transport sector might reinforce these fears among many African
people.
The painstaking work that led to the creation of your airline is a succession of
challenges that were taken up. The course of events should not be different. Indeed,
the IATA’s 64th Annual General Meeting which took place from 1st to 3rd June 2008 in
Istanbul, Turkey, gave me the opportunity to ascertain the great solidarity binding
airlines in the face of this high fuel price crisis.
They considered that the current crisis is much more severe than the
consequences of 11 September, and calls into question the development model of
this sector of activity, in front of which difficult choices must be operated: a much
substantial liberalisation of the sky, which will weaken many airlines, leading to the
renewal of fleets based on better performing and much more fuel efficient aircraft,
and inevitably, a hike in the price of air tickets.
Another asset on which ASKY can count to take up the challenge of this gloomy
economic situation is the support of the States of the West African Economic and
Monetary Union, of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as
well as of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC). The
call made by IATA to governments can only reinforce their conviction to support the
initiative of a mainly private community airline, for the integration of the African
continent. I hereby reiterate all my appreciation for their determination to assist ASKY
in its fight against the odds.
A last but not least asset is the commitment of each and everyone of you to live again
the dream of an Africa united around an airline, of an Africa that is proud of an airline
tailored to the size of its ambitions.
Receive my sincere thanks. |
